  • Sparsely hairy leaves divided into numerous segments
  • Small inconspicuous flowers and spine tipped burrs that are found in the leaf axils (junction of leaf and stem)

Key Identifying Features

  • Prostrate spreading perennial weed
  • The leaves are separated into 3 leaflets and the flowers are bright yellow
  • Burr medic forms a burr after flowering which falls to the ground after maturing

Key Identifying Features

  • Segmented flat, toothed leaves
  • Long, stout tap root
  • Yellow dandelion-like flowers that turn into white fluffy seeds

Key Identifying Features

  • Prostrate growing perennial with masses of flowers that sit well above the foliage
  • The clover leaf is made up of three leaflets that may be marked with a darker crescent shape

Key Identifying Features

  • Prostrate growing weed with broad flat leaves
  • The leaves are flat with red stems

Creeping Oxalis

Creeping Oxalis

Key Identifying Features

  • Highly invasive spreading weed with masses of small clover like leaves (either green or purple) 
  • Small yellow flower

Cudweed

Key Identifying Features

  • Large, flat, dark green leaves. 
  • Prostrate growth with tall flower spikes and small white flowers.

Dandelion

Dandelion

Key Identifying Features

  • Perennial growing as a flat rosette of flat, dark green leaves from a long, deep tap roo
  • Yellow flowers rise from the centre of the weed

Key Identifying Features

  • Can grow to nearly 1m high with a strong tap root
  • Long leaves are dark green and flat.

Highly invasive coarse bladed grass.

Mouse Ear Chick Weed

Mouse Ear Chick Weed

Key Identifying Features

  • Common garden weed with small, soft leaves
  • Large root system forming a mat underground
  • Tiny white flowers that produce a seed which drops to the ground when mature

Nut Grass

Key Identifying Features

  • Grows as a clump of bright green shiny leaves
  • Its inflorescence consists of several spoke-like spikes of reddish-brown flowers

Onion Grass

Key Identifying Features

Has narrow, strap like, green or blue green leaves with cream flowers carried on clusters at the end of long stalks. Has a onion odour when crushed.

Control Methods

There is no selective control domestically available for onion weed. We suggest spotting it with glyphossate (ie roundup) but be careful not to contact surrounding grass.

Papsalum

Key Identifying Features

  • Leaves that can grow more than 40cm long and flowers, covered in seeds, may be 50cm to 1m high
  • Seeds are arranged in a straight spike which is sticky to touch
  • Flourishes in spring and summer

Key Identifying Features

  • Strongly ribbed leaves that grow in a rosette which may be upright or spreading
  • Flower is brown and white in appearance and can often rise up on 20-30cm stalks

Key Identifying Features

A dark coloured clumping grass that can occur in lawns.

Sour Sob

Key Identifying Features

  • Perennial weed with a long white tap root attached to a bulb
  • The leaves are divided into clover looking leaflets that are covered in black dots
  • Sour sob flowers are bright yellow and grow above the foliage

Key Identifying Features

  • Upright growing annual
  • The stem clasping leaves are a soft green and the hollow stems exude a milky sap when broken
  • Flowers are yellow and seeds formed after flowing are topped with fluffy hairs that aid in their dispersal
